During a Wednesday Q&A stream for UFC broadcast partner ESPN, promotion boss Dana White revealed that the organization is looking to pair up Chandler (22-7) and Ferguson (25-6) for a matchup in the near future. However, the UFC president also added the booking is still in the negotiations stage and contracts have not yet been signed.
After a legendary ten-year run for MMA competitor Bellator, where he scored notable wins over talented fighters like Patricky “Pitbull” Freire, Benson Henderson, and Brent Primus, Chandler joined the UFC in 2021. “Iron” has lost two of his three outings in the promotion so far. However, those defeats came in a lightweight title fight against current champion Charles Oliveira, and a November setback against top contender Justin Gaethje in a scrap that earned many 2021 year-end awards for UFC “fight of the year.”
Dana White says Tony Ferguson vs Michael Chandler bout being worked on
Ferguson is mired in a career-low period. After becoming The UItimate Fighter Season 13 lightweight winner in 2011, “El Cucuy” won 13 of his first 14 fights inside the Octagon. He also scored interim lightweight title gold during that run. However, since then he has lost three straight with each bout being decisive defeats to elite 155-pound fighters Oliveira, Gaethje, and Beniel Dariush.
During his ESPN Q&A, White did not mention a possible date or location for a Ferguson vs Chandler fight if it does get finalized.
